do's & dont's
Do have lots of fun. Don't worry too much about it.
San Antonio is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year, and they know how to welcome guests. The famed Riverwalk is truly the San Antonio River, now controlled in a channel and winding its way around downtown San Antonio, below street level. Stone walkways, historic buildings, and gardens line this very special area. Nice to go for a stroll or ride a barge ( not on a track!) to a waterhole, restaurants from fine dining to ice cream mixed with a variety of shops and entertainment.
Health
You are in south, central Texas, where it can be warm and dry. Your body will need fluids, especially if we get a warm, late fall. Carry a bottle of water, and be sure to bring sunscreen. With the heat the hotels crank up the AC so you may need long sleeves or a sweater in the meeting space.
Smoking Etiquette
Generally speaking, smoking is not permitted in the hotel or convention center meeting space or in hotel guest rooms. Smoking is not permitted in public areas such as restaurants, hotel lobbies or the airport.
What to Pack for Texas
Hint: Wear what brings out your inner cowboy for the Sunday Welcome reception. Finally a place to strut your Diamonds and Denim! At the conference sessions, “Friday Casual” such as dockers and polo shirts with collars for attendees is fine. Speakers wear suits so you can spot them to get their business card.
Dress Clothes
Nothing flashy needed for the day time, but if invited to private parties, step it up a notch. Texans like to look sharp when they party.
Golf Clubs
If you’re a fan of the game, you’ll want to come a day early or use Saturday afternoon to check out the resort courses. Plastic spikes and knee length shorts are in.
Sunglasses
There’s still a lot of Texas sunshine in the fall. Chances are you’ll need some shades.
Walking Shoes
You’ll cover some ground from hotel to Convention Center to River Walk, so make sure your shoes are comfortable. Good year to show off your boots!
Bring Your Running Shoes
Tuesday morning Bernstein – Berkeley invites everyone to their annual, free 5k Fun Run through downtown streets and parks. Bring your running gear and join the pavement pounders for 6:30 am fun.
Warm – Light Jacket
It can be cool in the evening, even after a warm day. Bring a light jacket for the Alamo After Dark tour and for riding the River Walk barges in the evening.
